88 | Oh BABY! Why choose Montessori? The Montessori method is a purposeful approach to educa- tion developed by Italian physician, Dr. Maria Montessori in 1907. Parents who choose a Montessori school for their chil- dren do so because of the emphasis on one-on-one learn- ing, the multi-age grouping, and dedication to individual growth in a prepared environment. Montessori schools inspire confidence and discovery while nurturing the child’s innate desire for learning and social interations in an environment where trained teachers value and respect the child. Each child is taught individually using Montessori materials through a planned curriculum. Children learn how to learn which prepares each child for future aca- demic and social excellence. Dr. Montessori describes the child’s unique aptitude for learning as the ‘absorbent mind’. An example of this is when a 2-year old learns his native language without formal instruc- tion. Contrast that to an adult’s arduous effort to learn another language. Montessori provides methods and materials for the child to learn using his hands. The method’s emphasis on multi-age grouping benefit children in many ways. Children of differing education levels and ages are grouped together and taught to learn from one another. Younger children begin to emulate the older chil- dren’s attitudes and behavior, and older children learn about caring and mentoring their younger classmates. Montessori education has achieved world-wide recognition and success. This overview outlines the many advantages Montessori offers your child: • The Montessori method has been time-tested for more than 100 years throughout the world; • In the prepared environment of the Montessori school, the child develops character, concentration, coordina- tion, independence, and a sense of order; • Each child is taught individually; • A sense of community develops in this multi-age class- room; • All children are taught to respect themselves, others, and the environment. Though much has been said about the academic achieve- ment of Montessori children, the true value lies in the child’s love of learning. Photo by Edith Saldana Photography
